For Thursday, December 9

Last day. We will meet for a 45 minutes and fill out Assignment 28: Assessments of what we learned/struggled with/plan to work on (10 points), as well as a teacher assessment. I will be available for individual meetings of ten minutes each to anyone who would like to talk afterwards. NO FINAL.

For Tuesday, December 7

Assignment 26: FINAL PORTFOLIO. (60 points) This portfolio includes final drafts of two stories (INCLUDING A REVISION OF YOUR SECOND FULL STORY, based on your peer review), plus an additional three to four pages you are very fond off, CREATIVE WORK that you think represents your best attempts to understand and create given what you’ve learned in class. DO NOT TURN IN TO D2L. Bring copies of stories to turn in. Please staple each full story together, as well as any additional pages. All pages should be double spaced and in Times New Roman font.

Assignment 27: CLASS READING. (20 points) During class, everyone will read from their work for five minutes (two to three pages). Be prepared by choosing what you feel is your best work. Don’t be scared. We will all clap for you. But you can opt out (and not receive the points) if it terrifies you.

No class. Prepare your portfolio. (Due next week.)

For Tuesday, November 30

Assignment 25: Discussion Groups. (20 points) You must be present to get the points. You must bring copies of your Peer Review two-page summaries to class to give to your Peer(s). Groups will be assigned.

For Thursday, November 25

No class. Thanksgiving. Do not come to class.

For Tuesday, November 23

To do: Assignment 23: Creative Fiction: One full story (40 points). It must have a beginning, middle, and end (write it to “completion”). It should be longer than five pages, but no more than fifteen pages. Turn in to D2L. Bring two copies to class.

In Class: following the guidelines established on this blog, we will peer review. YOU MUST ATTEND TO COMPLETE ASSIGNMENT 24. Groups will be assigned. Do not worry about doing anything in advance for this ACCEPT bringing two copies of your own completed story. Must be in class to receive the points.

But before 11:59 p.m. on MONDAY, NOVEMBER 29: Turn in your two Peer Review two-page summaries to D2L: Assignment 24: Peer Review Workshop: Two-Page Summary of two stories from your peers (40 points)

For Thursday, November 18

To Read: FUTURISTIC FICTION: 2PhilipK.DickStories this story by Ursula LeGuin, and this Kurt Vonnegut story. Download and bring to class.

For Tuesday, November 16

To Read: OrientationOrozco (“Orientation” by Daniel Orozco from Best American Short Stories, 1995). Download and bring a copy to class.

To Do: Assignment 22: Creative Fiction (20 points). Write in SECOND PERSON a la Lorrie Moore and Daniel Orozco. Put in D2L AND bring a copy to class. Let’s make it a complete story, too. Say: three to four pages.

No class. Veteran’s Day. Do not come to class.

Assignment 21: Two-Page reflection (10 points) on Second Person and how it presents itself in creative writing. What does it do? What is it about? When might you use it, and in what situations?

For Tuesday, November 9

To Read: How to Become a Writer by Lorrie Moore. (Download and print. BRING TO CLASS.)

To Do: Assignment 20: Creative Fiction (10 points). Write in FIRST PERSON from the perspective of a different character than last week, but within the same story. 

For Thursday, November 4

Read: “Sagitarius” by Greg Hrbek and (pages 106 – 117) and “Them Old Cowboy Songs” By Annie Proulx (pages 241 – 263)  in Best American Short Stories.

To do: Assignment 19: Two-Page reflection (10 points) on what switching POV within a short story does to a story. How does it change what the story is about, and how does it feel to write one story around multiple points of view?
